Common Sense Has Left the Building

Imagine your neighbor comes over and plants a rose seedling in your yard. You don’t notice it right away, but even after you do see it start to develop and grow, you think, “Man, this isn’t a convenient time to have a rose bush. What do I know about growing and maintaining roses and do I really have the time and resources to keep it up?” But even so, you don’t uproot it. You let it grow a few more months. May arrives and little buds start to develop. You can see they are pink. Right before the bud starts to open, you go outside and snip off the blooms and then burn the bush, because you never really wanted the rose bush in the first place.

This illustration breaks down, as all analogies do at some point, but the logical fallacy of such a decision still stands. Good grief; you grew it that long. Why not dig it up and give it a friend who wants a rose bush? Why would some let it go that long only to destroy the roses?

Abortion never made sense to me, but logically–morality aside–why in the world would any woman want to endure 8-9 months of pregnancy and then destroy the life? What possible reason could there by for enduring morning sickness, headaches, pain, body changes, and all the other sacrifices carrying a life requires just to terminate it? How is that even in the best health interest of the woman carrying the baby?

CNN’s headline yesterday made my heart sink: “New York puts in measures to protect access to abortion […]”. Naturally, they’d use that positive terminology, as if abortion needs protecting. What about the lives within these women? What about their protection?

  • The first fetal surgery was performed over 35 years ago, and yet, it’s not a life… Ultrasounds in 3D became popular in the 90’s, showing the baby’s fully formed body and movements, and yet…

  • At six weeks, a fetus has a heartbeat and at 16 weeks, brain waves are recorded, he can suck his thumb and move facial muscles at 14 weeks (development stage shown below) and yet…
  • A fetus feels pain: “… at around week 23 the fetus can survive outside the womb, with medical support; also around this time the fetus can respond to aversive stimuli” (New York Times). ” Pain receptors are present throughout the unborn child’s entire body by no later than 16 weeks after fertilization, and nerves link these receptors to the brain’s thalamus and subcortical plate by no later than 20 weeks. For unborn children, says Dr. Paul Ranalli, a neurologist at the University of Toronto, 20 weeks is a “uniquely vulnerable time, since the pain system is fully established” (Doctors On Fetal Pain). ” Surgeons entering the womb to perform corrective procedures on unborn children have seen those babies flinch, jerk and recoil from sharp objects and incisions. In addition, ultrasound technology shows that unborn babies at 20 weeks and earlier react physically to outside stimuli such as sound, light and touch” (Doctors on Fetal Pain). Dr. Maureen Condic, an Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Utah, argues “The neural circuitry responsible for the most primitive response to pain, the spinal reflex, is in place by 8 weeks of development,” she explained. “This is the earliest point at which the fetus experiences pain in any capacity.”(https://oneofus.eu/2013/05/expert-tells-congress-unborn-babies-can-feel-pain-starting-at-8-weeks/).

Omar L. Hamada made this statement:I want to clear something up so that there is absolutely no doubt. I’m a Board Certified OB/GYN who has delivered over 2,500 babies. There’s not a single fetal or maternal condition that requires third trimester abortion. Not one. Delivery, yes. Abortion, no. There is absolutely no medical reason to kill a near term or term infant. For any reason.”

So, explain to me why New York’s ruling yesterday was a cause for celebration? At what point do we face the facts that our country has slaughtered over 40 million babies? We are cheering the brutal murder of a child? The mere idea of abortion is abominable, but full-term (3rd-term abortion) makes me want to vomit and then weep.

” The fallen nature of humanity is evident. Who could cheer the potential to stop the beating hearts of children who are, in some cases, just weeks away from birth? And the closer one gets to the issue, the more one sees just how blinded by injustice people can get. Some who claim to be about protecting the weak from the strong are able to nonetheless completely ignore those, the unborn, who are politically unpopular in their tribe” (Russell Moore).
